Halong Entry Requirements

Halong Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed December 2024. Always verify with official Vietnamese government sources and your nearest Vietnamese embassy or consulate before traveling, as visa policies and entry requirements are subject to change.
Halong Bay is located in Quang Ninh Province in northern Vietnam, and travelers visiting this UNESCO World Heritage Site must comply with Vietnam's national entry requirements. Most international visitors arrive through Hanoi's Noi Bai International Airport (approximately 165km away) or through other Vietnamese ports of entry before traveling to Halong. Vietnam has modernized its visa system in recent years, offering e-visa options for many nationalities, though requirements vary significantly based on citizenship. The immigration process for entering Vietnam is straightforward but requires advance planning for most travelers. Visitors should ensure their passport is valid for at least six months beyond their intended stay and contains blank pages for stamps. Vietnam offers various visa options including visa exemptions for certain nationalities, e-visas, and traditional visa-on-arrival arrangements. Processing times and requirements can change, so early preparation is essential. Once entry formalities are completed at your port of arrival in Vietnam, traveling to Halong Bay requires no additional immigration procedures as it is domestic travel within the country. However, visitors should carry identification at all times and be prepared for occasional security checks, especially in tourist areas and when boarding cruise vessels in Halong Bay.

Arrival Process

Most international travelers visiting Halong Bay will clear Vietnamese immigration at Hanoi's Noi Bai International Airport or another international entry point. The process is efficient but can involve queues during peak travel times.

1
Arrival and Document Check
Upon landing, proceed to immigration counters. Have your passport, visa (if applicable), completed arrival card, and return/onward ticket ready. Signs are in Vietnamese and English.
2
Immigration Counter
Present your passport and visa documents to the immigration officer. They will verify your visa validity, check passport expiration, and may ask basic questions about your visit. Biometric data (fingerprints and photo) will be collected.
3
Document Stamping
If approved, your passport will be stamped with entry date and permitted length of stay. Verify the dates are correct before leaving the counter.
4
Baggage Claim
Collect your luggage from the designated carousel. Trolleys are available (may require small fee or deposit).
5
Customs Declaration
Proceed through customs. Use green channel (nothing to declare) or red channel (items to declare). Customs officers may conduct random baggage inspections.
6
Exit and Onward Travel
After clearing customs, exit to arrivals hall. From Hanoi, arrange transport to Halong Bay via taxi, private car, bus, or pre-booked transfer (3-4 hour journey).

Tips for Smooth Entry

Arrive at immigration with all documents organized and readily accessible. Keep printed copies even if you have digital versions.
For e-visa holders: print your approval letter in color on A4 paper. Immigration officers need to scan the QR code.
Have small USD bills ready if using visa-on-arrival service for stamping fees. Credit cards are not accepted at immigration counters.
Take a photo of your passport information page and visa before travel. Store it separately as backup.
Be patient during peak arrival times (morning and evening international flights). Immigration queues can be lengthy.
Dress appropriately and be respectful during immigration process. Remove hats and sunglasses when approaching counter.
Keep your immigration stamp receipt/card safe - you may need to present it when departing Vietnam.
If traveling to Halong Bay immediately after arrival, pre-book transport to avoid hassles and ensure legitimate service.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own passport (valid 6+ months) and appropriate visa/visa exemption. Minors under 18 traveling without both parents should carry notarized parental consent letter, birth certificate copy, and parent/guardian contact information. Single parents should carry documentation proving sole custody or permission from other parent. Adoption papers should be carried for adopted children. Some airlines and immigration may ask additional questions about children traveling with adults who aren't parents.

Traveling with Pets

Pets entering Vietnam require: valid rabies vaccination certificate (given at least 30 days before travel but within 12 months), veterinary health certificate issued within 7 days of travel, import permit from Vietnam Department of Animal Health (apply at least 15 days before arrival), microchip identification. Upon arrival, pets undergo quarantine inspection at port of entry. Some animals may require quarantine period. Airlines have specific requirements for pet transport. Note: Halong Bay cruise boats typically do not allow pets onboard.

Extended Stays and Visa Extensions

Tourist visas can sometimes be extended once for up to 30 days through Vietnam Immigration Department offices or authorized travel agencies. Apply at least 7 days before current visa expires. Extensions are not guaranteed. For stays longer than tourist visa allows, consider: applying for longer-term visa from embassy before travel, visa runs to neighboring countries (check current regulations), or applying for temporary residence card if eligible (work, study, family). Overstaying visa results in fines (minimum $25/day), deportation, and potential entry ban.

Business Travelers

Business visitors can use tourist visa/e-visa for short business trips (meetings, conferences). For work activities, employment, or extended business stays, proper work permit and business visa required. Sponsorship from Vietnamese company needed. Carry business invitation letter, company registration documents, and purpose of visit documentation. Register temporary residence if staying over 30 days.

Dual Citizens

Travelers with dual citizenship including Vietnamese nationality must enter and exit Vietnam using Vietnamese passport. Contact Vietnamese embassy for guidance. Vietnamese-origin travelers may be eligible for visa exemptions but should verify requirements based on current citizenship.

Journalists and Media Professionals

Professional journalists, photographers, and film crews require special press credentials and permissions from Vietnamese authorities. Apply through Vietnamese embassy well in advance. Tourist visa does not permit professional journalism activities. Unauthorized journalism activities can result in detention, equipment confiscation, and deportation.
